Creating a navigation menu using the AccordionMenuPlugin is as simple as:
# writing a two level unordered list using ~TiddlyWiki syntax
# and placing {} on the line after it.
Example:
{{{

** Link1
** Link2
** Link3
*Section 2
** Link4
** Link5
** Link6
*Section 3

How to convert audio to native DV encoding for video editing using iTunes

1. Open iTunes. If you are converting an audio file from a format other than AIFF go to "File > Import..."

2. In the Import dialog, select the file and click "Open."

3. Now go to "iTunes > Preferences..."

4. In the Preferences box select the "Advanced tab" and the "Importing" sub-tab. Set the "Import Using:" menu to "AIFF Encoder" and from the "Settings:" menu choose "Custom..."

5. In the "AIFF Encoder" dialog that pops up set the Sample Rate: to 48.000 kHz, the Sample Size: to 16 bit, and the Channels: to Stereo. Then click OK.

6. Click OK to close the preferences.

7. If you are capturing a track from an audio CD put the CD in the computer. Select the CD from the Source list on the left side of the iTunes window.

8You should see a list of the track on the CD. Click once on the track you wish to use so that it becomes highlighted.

#If you are converting audio you imported select the Library from the Source list on the left side of the iTunes window. You will see a list of tracks in the Library. Click once on the track you wish to use so that it becomes highlighted.
#Now with the track you wish to convert highlighted go to the Advanced menu and select Convert Selection to AIFF. If this option is not available review the instructions on setting the Importing preferences. iTunes will begin the conversion, it may take a little while.
#If you are converting from a CD the converted track will be in the Library. If you converted a file already in the Library there will now appear to be two versions of the track.
#Select the track you just generated (if you are not sure which track repeat the following steps until you locate it). From the File menu choose Show Song File. A Finder window will open with the track selected. If you are not sure that this is the correct track choose Get Info from the File menu and look at the creation date. It should be today.
#If you are working from an external hard drive you should move your converted audio track to that drive. Otherwise move the track to the TEMP space or if there is no TEMP space then to the Desktop.
#Now from within Final Cut Pro go to the File menu and select Import -> Files, locate your converted audio track, and click Choose. Your audio track will appear in the Browser ready for use.

Digital video features and benefits

Mini DV tape format
Digital video can be recorded on miniDV tape, a hard drive, a DVD disc, and solid state SD cards (like those in digital still cameras). The majority of people at UCSC use Mini DV tape. Digital video cameras store video as digital bits on a minDV tape, unlike prior formats like VHS and Hi-8 which recorded analog signals. The tapes are available at the Baytree, photo and drug stores and run about $3.00 - 5.00 each.

Timecode
Digital video format records a continuous signal linked to a discreet timecode that provides an actual numeric location– to the frame –for your video. This timecode is transferred when you import or capture your video from camera or deck and convert it to a computer file for editing. This embedded timecode makes professional-level editing possible on a desktop computer – rather than on thousands of dollars worth of equipment, as required with analog video.

Timecode's notation of 00:00:00:00 translates to hours:minutes:seconds:frames

Consistent quality
Analog tape has some loss of quality during the process of converting the tape into a digital format – a good analogy would be that it is similar to making a photocopy of a photocopy. With digital video, each copy is nearly an exact replica, without any significant loss in quality.

[img[images/strangelove.jpg]] [img[images/strangelove.jpg]]

What you'll need

DV Camcorder
Many consumer camcorder use minDV tape. You can use your own camera, or check out a camera from http://media.ucsc.edu You will be able to record and play back video on the camera. You can also use the miniDV tape decks in the Social Sciences 1 and Porter Arts labs.

Firewire or USB Cable
With a digital video camera you use a cable - ideally Firewire - to connect your camera to the computer and import video directly to the computer or an external hard drive for editing in iMovie or Final Cut Pro. Check your camera and manual to see what kind of cable to use.

[img[images/firewire.jpg]] [img[images/usb.jpg]]

External Hard Drive
Before you can edit digital video, you first need to "import" video from a deck or camera – then store the video – temporarily on a lab computer – or for a longer length of time on an external firewire External Hard Drives. Keep in mind that digital video files take many gigabytes (GB) of disk space, depending on the video file format. http://slugfilm.ucsc.edu/resources/hdpricelist.html.
I. Share a Quicktime from iMovie and save it in your Movies folder

1. In the top menu of iMovie08, go to "Share > Export Movie . . ."

2. In the export dialog, give your file a name, a save location, and make sure "Size to Export" is set to "Medium" Now click on the "Export" button. You will see a progress animation. When it is complete, your movie export is complete.

II. Create a DVD from iDVD using your shared Quicktime which was saved in your Movies folder

1. Open iDVD and click on "New Project"

2. Give your iDVD project a name, and save to your external hard drive. A standard definition DV .mov will be 4:3 aspect ratio

3. You will now see the main iDVD interface. The right triangle is to preview how the DVD will look. Right now click on the "i" for menu settings.

4. In the "Menu Info" dialog, you can drag the sliders to remove the looping menu, and to remove any menu music

5. You can change the menu by selecting a different theme from the right thumbnail column. You will be asked if you wish to keep or change your current aspect ratio - click on Keep.

To insert an image in the menu dropzone(s), (1) click on "Media" in the bottom right, then go to the top right and (2) click "Photos" at the top right – you will then be able to select any photo out of iPhoto and (3) drag it into the dropzone. If your photo isn't in iPhoto, jump over and import it and it will then be a selection option. You could also insert a movie from your Movies folder by selecting "Movies" instead of "Photos"

To make an actual button to your video, click on Movies in the top right, select the "Movies" folder in the right column and click- drag your video thumbnail onto the menu as shown below:

The button will have the same name as the file, but you can select and rename all the text elements in iMovie by clicking on them.

Now click on the bottom right triangle to preview

You will see a controller which you can click on and use just like a DVD remote control. Test your buttons and see if your clip plays as it should. Click on Menu to go back to the menu.

Before actually burning your DVD you'll want to check your project info to make sure the DVD will fit on a standard DVD disc (capacity 4.2 GB) Go to Project > Project info

In the Project Info dialog you will see if you are reaching capacity. If the project is too large, you may get a warning - just go into project info and set encoding down to "High Quality" which provides more compression for larger files

Now you are ready to burn. Go to File > Burn DVD

You may be prompted if there is a warning in a project. Click on DVD map

In the map, rollover any yellow alerts - here the project has some empty drop zone, but those won't impact the final burn. When done reviewing, click the bottom right "Return" button.

You will now be prompted to insert a recordable disc (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+-RW). Be sure you have a recordable DVD, not a CD! After insertion you will see a progress animation - and once the burn is complete you will get a "success" message. You will also be prompted to insert another DVD if you want to record more than one.

It's a good strategy to test the DVD in a player, computer etc before assuming it works. Once in a great while a burn won't work correctly.

Congratulations! You now have a DVD.

!!Usage:
* create a two-level unordered list using wiki syntax, and place {} on the line after it.
* to create a vertical menu use {} instead.
* to assign custom classes to the list, just pass them as parameters to the macro {}

!!Features:
*Supports just a single level of drop-downs, as anything more usually provides a poor experience for the user.
* Very light weight, about 1.5kb of JavaScript and 4kb of CSS.
* Comes with two built in css 'themes', the default horizontal and vertical.

!!Customizing:
* to customize the appearance of the menu's, you can either add a custom class as described above or, you can edit the CSS via the StyleSheetDropDownMenu shadow tiddler.

Reformat New Hard Drive

When working with video on a Macintosh, it is recommended that you reformat your new hard drive before using it. If the drive is labeled as set up to work with both Mac and PC platforms, you will need to reformat to Mac format only. If you wish to continue working with the drive on your PC - you can purchase a utility called http://www.macdrive.com/ for your PC which will allow you to read files off your Mac formatted external drive.

These instructions are intended for the formatting of new hard drives. If you choose to format a drive that already has files on it, you will need to copy your files first to another location – as reformatting completely wipes the drive clean. Instructional Computing is not responsible for any lost or deleted files – please proceed with care.

To format your new drive:

1. Plug in the firewire cable to the computer and external drive. Plug in the power adapter and turn the drive on. You should see an icon for the drive appear on the desktop.

2. In the "Applications" folder, go to "Utilities > Disk Utility" and double click to start it up.

3.

a. In Disk Utility, select the icon for your external drive in the left column (note in this example it is the La Cie drive not "Tiny" which is a partition, or sub-component, of the La Cie drive)

b. Click on the "Erase" tab and in the format dropdown select "Mac OS Extended Journaled." If the drive was formatted to be for both Mac and PC, it will read MS-DOS and or FAT32 before you reset this.

c. Click on the "Erase" button. The interface will grey out some areas, but then will reset to dark once reformatting is complete. It only takes a few second for the drive to reformat.

4. Quit out of disk utility – you're ready to use your Mac format external hard drive.
You can import a computer video file in .MOV QuickTime format:

1. In iMovie HD, go to "File > Import . . ."

2. Select the .MOV you want to import

3. You will see a progress animation

4. When the video is imported, you will see it as a clip in the Panes section of the interface. It is now ready for editing.

Before you record video, you will need to be connected to the computer with a Firewire cable. Be sure the camera is turned on before starting iMovie.

1. Start up iMovie HD (version 6). In the opening dialog select "New Project"

2. Click the mode switch to set iMovie HD to camera mode (shown below)

3. If you have more than one deck, or a camcorder and iSight are connected, choose your device from the pop-up menu that appears when you press the camera icon. The monitor screen should indicate "Camera Connected"

4. Use the capture controls on the camera or deck to review your tape in the iMovie monitor. When connected with a firewire cable, you can use the software controls to control the device.

A. Rewind the tape to a few seconds before the point where you want to start importing, then click the "Play" control

B. When you see the frame where you want to begin importing, click the Import button in the iMovie monitor or press the Space bar.

5. Your imported video appears in the Clips pane or timeline viewer, depending upon how you set your Import preferences. iMovie HD automatically creates a new clip at each scene break (wherever the recording was interrupted as the camera was set to standby).

6. Click the blue "Import" again or press the Space bar when you want to stop importing.
There are several JVC "combo" decks in the Porter Arts and Social Sciences 1 Instructional Computing labs. These decks can work with both DV tapes (helping to avoid wear on personal cameras) and VHS tapes.

1. Make sure the power on the deck is on. It should be connected to the computer with the Firewire cable.

2. Place your tape in the VHS slot.

3. Select the "S-VHS" arrow button on the Dub Direction control (pointing to the left), the round "VHS" indicator should be selected and lit.

5. Set the channel of the deck to F-1 by rotating the dial.

6. Start up iMovie HD (version 6). In the opening dialog select "New Project"

7. Click the mode switch to set iMovie HD to camera mode (shown below)

8. Choose the deck device from the pop-up menu that appears when you press the camera icon. The monitor screen should indicate "Camera Connected." If the deck doesn't appear in the list, quit iMovie HD and restart with the deck turned on first.

9. Cue your source tape to the point where you want to start recording and pause the video. While using the VHS the deck cannot be controlled from the computer. Use the physical controls on the front of the deck.

10. Once you have found the material you would like to capture, press Play on the deck then click the Import button in iMovie. The video will be automatically imported into the Clips panes.

8. When you have captured all the video that you want, press import again to stop capturing.

|Description|Documentation for SinglePageModePlugin|
Normally, as you click on the links in TiddlyWiki, more and more tiddlers are displayed on the page. The order of this tiddler display depends upon when and where you have clicked. Some people like this non-linear method of reading the document, while others have reported that when many tiddlers have been opened, it can get somewhat confusing. SinglePageModePlugin allows you to configure TiddlyWiki to navigate more like a traditional multipage web site with only one item displayed at a time.
!!!!!Usage
<<<
When the plugin is enabled, only one tiddler will be displayed at a time and the browser window's titlebar is updated to include the current tiddler title. The browser's location URL is also updated with a 'permalink' for the current tiddler so that it is easier to create a browser 'bookmark' for the current tiddler. Alternatively, even when displaying multiple tiddlers //is// permitted, you can still reduce the potential for confusion by forcing tiddlers to always open at the top (or bottom) of the page instead of being displayed following the tiddler containing the link that was clicked.
<<<
!!!!!Configuration
<<<
<<option chkSinglePageMode>> Display one tiddler at a time
><<option chkSinglePagePermalink>> Automatically permalink current tiddler
><<option chkSinglePageKeepFoldedTiddlers>> Don't close tiddlers that are folded
><<option chkSinglePageKeepEditedTiddlers>> Don't close tiddlers that are being edited
<<option chkTopOfPageMode>> Open tiddlers at the top of the page
<<option chkBottomOfPageMode>> Open tiddlers at the bottom of the page
<<option chkSinglePageAutoScroll>> Automatically scroll tiddler into view (if needed)

Notes:
* {{block{
The "display one tiddler at a time" option can also be //temporarily// set/reset by including a 'paramifier' in the document URL: {} or {}. You can also use {}, where 'expression' is any javascript statement that evaluates to true or false. This allows you to create hard-coded links in other documents that can selectively enable/disable the use of this option based on various programmatic conditions, such as the current username. For example, using
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;{}
enables 'one tiddler at a time' display for all users //other than// "~SomeName")}}}
* If more than one display mode is selected, 'one at a time' display takes precedence over both 'top' and 'bottom' settings, and if 'one at a time' setting is not used, 'top of page' takes precedence over 'bottom of page'.
* When using Apple's Safari browser, automatically setting the permalink causes an error and is disabled.

!!!!!Revisions
<<<
2008.06.12 [2.9.5] corrected 'scroll to top of page' logic in auto-scroll handling
2008.06.11 [2.9.4] added chkSinglePageKeepEditedTiddlers option
2008.06.05 [2.9.3] in displayTiddler(), bypass single/top/bottom mode handling if startingUp. Allows multiple tiddlers to be displayed during startup processing (e.g., #story:DefaultTiddlers), even if single/top/bottom mode is enabled.
2008.04.18 [2.9.2] in displayTiddler() and checkLastURL(), handling for Unicode in tiddler titles (remove explicit conversion between Unicode and UTF, as this is apparently done automatically by encode/decodeURIComponent, resulting in double-encoding!
2008.04.08 [2.9.1] don't automatically add options to AdvancedOptions shadow tiddler
2008.04.02 [2.9.0] in displayTiddler(), when single-page mode is in use and a tiddler is being edited, ask for permission to save-and-close that tiddler, instead of just leaving it open.
2008.03.29 [2.8.3] in displayTiddler(), get title from tiddler object (if needed). Fixes errors caused when calling function passes a tiddler *object* instead of a tiddler *title*
2008.03.14 [2.8.2] in displayTiddler(), if editing specified tiddler, just move it to top/bottom of story *without* re-rendering (prevents discard of partial edits).
2008.03.06 [2.8.1] in paramifier handler, start 'checkURL' timer if chkSinglePageMode is enabled
2008.03.06 [2.8.0] added option, {}, so folded tiddlers won't be closed when using single-page mode. Also, in checkURL(), if hash is a permaview (e.g., "#foo bar baz"), then display multiple tiddlers rather than attempting to display "foo bar baz" as a single tiddler
2008.03.05 [2.7.0] added support for "SPM:" URL paramifier
2008.03.01 [2.6.0] in hijack of displayTiddler(), added 'title' argument to closeAllTiddlers() so that target tiddler isn't closed-and-reopened if it was already displayed. Also, added config.options.chkSinglePageAutoScrolloption to bypass automatic 'scroll into view' logic (note: core still does it's own ensureVisible() handling)
2007.12.22 [2.5.3] in checkLastURL(), use decodeURIComponent() instead of decodeURI so that tiddler titles with commas (and/or other punctuation) are correctly handled.
2007.10.26 [2.5.2] documentation cleanup
2007.10.08 [2.5.1] in displayTiddler(), when using single-page or top-of-page mode, scrollTo(0,0) to ensure that page header is in view.
2007.09.13 [2.5.0] for TPM/BPM modes, don't force tiddler to redisplay if already shown. Allows transition between view/edit or collapsed/view templates, without repositioning displayed tiddler.
2007.09.12 [2.4.0] added option to disable automatic permalink feature. Also, Safari is now excluded from permalinking action to avoid bug where tiddlers don't display after hash is updated.
2007.03.03 [2.3.1] fix typo when adding BPM option to AdvancedOptions (prevented checkbox from appearing)
2007.03.03 [2.3.0] added support for BottomOfPageMode (BPM) based on request from DaveGarbutt
2007.02.06 [2.2.3] in Story.prototype.displayTiddler(), use convertUnicodeToUTF8() for correct I18N string handling when creating URL hash string from tiddler title (based on bug report from BidiX)
2007.01.08 [2.2.2] use apply() to invoke hijacked core functions
2006.07.04 [2.2.1] in hijack for displayTiddlers(), suspend TPM as well as SPM so that DefaultTiddlers displays in the correct order.
2006.06.01 [2.2.0] added chkTopOfPageMode (TPM) handling
2006.02.04 [2.1.1] moved global variable declarations to config.* to avoid FireFox 1.5.0.1 crash bug when assigning to globals
2005.12.27 [2.1.0] hijack displayTiddlers() so that SPM can be suspended during startup while displaying the DefaultTiddlers (or #hash list). Also, corrected initialization for undefined SPM flag to "false", so default behavior is to display multiple tiddlers
2005.12.27 [2.0.0] Update for TW2.0
2005.11.24 [1.1.2] When the back and forward buttons are used, the page now changes to match the URL. Based on code added by Clint Checketts
2005.10.14 [1.1.1] permalink creation now calls encodeTiddlyLink() to handle tiddler titles with spaces in them
2005.10.14 [1.1.0] added automatic setting of window title and location bar ('auto-permalink'). feature suggestion by David Dickens.
2005.10.09 [1.0.1] combined documentation and code in a single tiddler
2005.08.15 [1.0.0] Initial Release

After you've captured all the video clips you want, you'll need to edit them into a movie. Drag one of the clips from the clips panes in the upper right of your screen down to the clip viewer editing area. The icon for the clip will appear in the horizontal row at the bottom.

Note: this will move the clip from the clips pane to the bottom viewer – if you make editing changes (cropping, etc) to the clip in the timeline and then decide you don't like the changes you made, you won't be able to go back to your original clip without recapturing it off your camera. However, you can duplicate clips in the clips pane before moving them to the timeline, leaving a copy of the original clip in case you need it. Simply hold down the Option key while dragging the clip(s) to the timeline. An icon for each clip will appear in the clip viewer, but the original clip will still be in the clips panes.

Note: On the Mac, Option+drag always means "copy rather than move" -- this trick is handy when managing files in the Finder, copying selected regions in Photoshop, and more.

Now repeat the process for other clips, dragging them down from the Shelf to the Viewer. You should try to do this roughly in the order in which you want your clips to appear in your movie, although you can move them around in the Viewer if you want to change the order.

You can view the clips you've dropped into the Viewer in two ways:

    * Clip Viewer, by clicking on the icon on the far left above the viewer area that looks like a frame of film. This view displays icons of each clip, stacking them from left to right. This mode is used for changing the basic order of clips.

    * Timeline Viewer, by clicking on the icon on the far left above the viewer that looks like a small clock. This mode will let you control in and out points of individual video clips, and also lets you see audio tracks. Timeline Viewer mode is what you should use to edit your movie.

You can play one clip in the Monitor window by clicking on it - its background will turn blue - and then clicking on the play button above (or pressing the space bar on your keyboard). To stop playing, click again on the Play button (or press the space bar).

You can view two or more clips by clicking on each one while holding down the Shift key - the borders around the selected clips will turn blue - and then clicking on the Play button in the Monitor window.

If you want to play all the clips, click anywhere outside the Viewer so that no clips are selected, then click the Play button (or press the space bar).

You also can use the Scroll Bar below the Timeline Viewer to scroll to different points in your movie.

And you can use the Zoom tool at the bottom left to zoom in on a particular clip by dragging it to the right. Or you can zoom out to see more of your movie clips by dragging the tool to the left.

Note: when clicking on clips to play them or to edit the video, you probably should uncheck the Edit Volume box at the bottom below the Viewer. Otherwise you may accidentally add audio editing points on a clip when you click on it, and thus could change the volume of the clip at those points.
